After 3 years of hard work, the SP80 team has launched the construction of the boat destined to break the world sailing speed record! The construction was entrusted to the Persico Marine workshop following the validation of its technical solutions on Lake Geneva, thanks to their prototype.
- The launch is planned for spring 2022
- The first sailings will take place in the summer of 2022 in an attempt to reach 80 knots (150km/h) and thus break the world record before the end of the year
The Italian shipyard, Persico Marine, is a key player in the world of sailing and has recognised know-how and technical experience: from the Vendée Globe to the America’s Cup and the Volvo Ocean Race, many sailors from all over the world have put their trust in Persico Marine.
“Conquering the world sailing speed record is a fascinating challenge, as it allows us to push the boundaries of technology with projects that are different from what we normally do” – says Mark Somerville, Managing Director of Persico Marine. “We are pleased to be involved in the research and development of such a successful and ambitious concept, and we look forward to seeing the boat in the water to break the speed record.”
The realisation of such an ambitious challenge poses a significant number of technological, sporting and also legal challenges. P&TS, SP80’s first official partner, is making the project possible by supporting the branding, protecting its many technological innovations, negotiating development and sponsorship contracts.
