P&TS welcomes the ratification of the Unified Patent Court Agreement (UPC) by the United Kingdom.
The announcement was made yesterday, on World IP Day yesterday (April 26), by Intellectual Property Minister of the UK Sam Gyimah.
The plans for a single European patent court have been years in the making; despite Bexit, this ratification is a huge step forward and now only ratification by Germany is necessary for the court to come into existence. The UPC system will provide businesses with the option of a more simplified way to protect their intellectual property and enforce their rights across Europe than currently exists. In particular, patent will be litigated at a single court in the EU, providing a more effective to collect damages in case of infringement in multiple countries.
